Founded in 2016 by Christian de Boer (Jaya House Hotels) and Dean McLachlan (JustRide Motorbike Adventures), Refill Not Landfill is a global campaign to reduce single-use plastic drinking bottles and other single-use plastic waste.
Refill Not Landfill aims to reduce the millions of plastic water bottles discarded each year by encouraging the use of reusable drinking bottles, replacing millions of single-use plastic water bottles, and offering free water refill stations at participating businesses and partners around the world.
Our informal consortium hopes to revolutionize the way that tourists (and locals) consume water in a world where few plastic containers are actually recycled, with most ending up in mountainous landfills or piling up beside roads, choking waterways, killing our oceans, and littering cities, towns and fields with plastic waste.
The statistics are shocking…for example, in Cambodia…
4.8 million visitors travelled to Cambodia in 2015, staying for an average of 6.8 days. Each visitor consumed around 2 litres of water per day, which amounts to more than 10 million half-litre single-use plastic waters bottles, in just one month! That is a staggering 355,000 bottles per day, or almost 130,000,000 bottles per year. Can you imagine 26 Olympic-sized swimming pools full of plastic water bottles, every year? But, there is another way…
Anyone can refill their bottle with clean drinking water, free of charge, at designated Refill Not Landfill refill stations around the world! Since our launch in 2016, Refill Not Landfill has received orders for more than 160,000 refill bottles from a diverse range of restaurants, hotels, cafés, NGOs and schools… This represents a staggering potential saving of 235 million plastic bottles over four years!
We are passionate about working together to develop a greener, cleaner, and more beautiful planet for the benefit of all of us, including future generations yet to come. We would love your small business, company or organization to become a part of our vision!
