Three Siem Reap business owners are driving a conscientious effort to reduce the amount of plastic polluting the city with an initiative to replace one-use plastic water bottles with refillable ones. Cambodia’s tourists alone have the potential to leave behind 130 million plastic bottles annually, according to Christian de Boer, Dean McLachlan and Katrine Solhaug. The trio launched Refill not Landfill Cambodia last year, and began contacting other businesses to convince them to adopt or sell the aluminium containers and to host free refill stations.

My last few overseas trips have been to Asia and the discrepancy between how recycling is handled here in North America versus other continents is silently alarming. I see the eco-friendly initiatives that hotels offer, from the baseline reuse of towels and linens to recycling bins and paper cups. But is this enough? Am I being a conscious traveller and doing what I can to combat the negative effects of tourism? Soon, I’ll be making my way to Cambodia and in my research of Siem Reap, I stumbled upon a great recycling program that addresses some of my concerns.

The number of plastic bottles being used by tourists in Cambodia is shocking. These bottles end up in landfill or at sea causing untold damage to our planet. Most problems can be addressed if we just adopt an alternative product or approach and the plastic problem is no different. We found out about the Refill Not Landfill campaign to stop the plastic problem and would love to share it with you here.

RefillNotLandfill aims to cut down on the millions of plastic water bottles discarded throughout Southeast Asia each year by offering an alternative: reusable stainless steel and aluminium bottles. In Cambodia alone, the tourism industry produces 4.6 million single use plastic bottles every month, with no recycling.

4.6 million plastic bottles end up in the Cambodia countryside monthly as a result of tourism. The Refill not Landfill campaign aims to reduce this number by providing free water refill for travelers. Babel Guesthouse has been part of this campaign from its initiation. We provide free water in our refill station, and our guests can support this campaign by purchasing a reusable aluminum bottle at Babel Eco-shop and Refill Station. You can simply fill up this bottle at refill stations all over Cambodia and several neighboring countries.

Their informal consortium hopes to revolutionize the way that tourists consume water in a country where few plastic containers are recycled, with most ending up in mountainous landfills or piling up beside roads, choking the Kingdom’s waterways and littering azure fields with waste.

REFILL NOT LANDFILL is a community environment project launched successfully in Cambodia, Laos, and Indonesia. Now it is here in Thailand. The project’s aim is to reduce the need to buy water in single-use plastic bottles that ultimately pollute our lands and oceans after disposal. The concept is simple. Hotels provide their guests’ water canisters printed with the campaign QR code. Guests scan the QR code with smart phones to launch Google Maps, which shows the nearest free water refill station.
